Best areas and towns to stay in Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is an ideal destination to spend a holiday, no matter what time or season of the year you want to go. Its average annual temperature is around 22 degrees making the visit to this spectacular island very pleasant at any time of the year.
With a great variety of services and things to do this holiday destination is hard to top: excellent hotel choices, diverse nightlife activities, terraces, bars, clubs… and much more! The cultural offer – cinema, theatre, music & dance festivals – is very entertaining, even more so if you decide to visit the island during the Carnival!
But what are the best places to stay in Gran Canaria? Here are some recommendations and tips to help you get the most out of your island visit.
Maspalomas
In the south of the island we find one of the main tourist centres in the area of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. It is especially attractive for enjoying its cultural offer as well as its hotels. In fact, some of the main and best known hotels in Gran Canaria are located here.
Very well located, next to the GC-1 motorway, this town is just 20 minutes from the airport of Gran Canaria and just 35 minutes from Las Palmas.
Why is Maspalomas the ideal place to stay in Gran Canaria? The answer is simple: because in this area you will find many of the most attractive features of the island, such as its marvellous beaches (don’t miss La Playa del Inglés!) with crystal clear waters perfect for water sports and fine golden sand to sunbathe all morning. We also recommend a visit to the Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve, an impressive natural ecosystem. Definitely bring your camera as you will take the most spectacular pictures of this magnificent place to show off.
Meloneras
A totally different atmosphere. Close to Maspalomas we find the area of Meloneras, a more modern and elegant environment. With designer shops and luxury restaurants this is the place to see and experience the island from a different point of view.
Meloneras has a great nightlife oriented more towards entertainment, casino games and having a drink on a stylish terrace overlooking the ocean. In addition, the gastronomy you can enjoy here is first class, with a local and international variety that makes this truly the top area to stay in Gran Canaria.
Puerto Rico
On the coast of Mogán we find Puerto Rico, a distinguished tourist beach area achieving its fame thanks to the fact that it was the first to have an artificial beach on the island. A highlight of Puerto Rico is its climate: the winds are mild and the temperature is very pleasant making it the ideal place for family holidays and to enjoy a few days relaxing in the sun.
If you are looking for a real paradise with fun beaches perfect for children, preferably in an area with a consistent temperature and humidity throughout the year, Puerto Rico is the right place for you to stay on the island Gran Canaria.
Puerto de Mogán
If you’re feeling like staying in a more trendy area we recommend to check out Puerto de Mogán. It is a picturesque coastal town with pretty alleys and small canals which have earned it the nickname of “Little Venice”.
The atmosphere here is very peaceful and welcoming. If you are searching for a more relaxed and calm experience of the island, enjoying the sea, the sun, chic terraces, delicious local cuisine and some light beach sports, Puerto de Mogán is your place to stay.
Agaete
If there is one thing that can be said about Agaete: It is a charming fishing village. The main attraction is its architecture as it has one of the most interesting old towns in Gran Canaria. The whitewashed houses dotted along the cliffs and the buildings with their flowered courtyards are an absolute delight. Enjoy your holidays while letting yourself be carried away by history.
Even though being a small town it has the most varied beach offer. There is something for everyone’s taste, such as Las Nieves beach which is very close to the old pier and Guayedra beach located near the ravine that gives it its name.
On top of all this we find some emblematic corners of the island in Agaete such as the Tamadaba Natural Park with the largest pine forest in Gran Canaria. This area is really worth visiting as you’ll have much to discover and enjoy.
St. Augustine
We couldn’t end our list of recommendations without mentioning this marvellous touristic hub. A wide range of hotels await us in this quiet area, ideal for those holidays with your partner or family.
The beaches here have a dark shade of sand and although it is a well-known area its not too crowded with tourists so you can enjoy peaceful and fully relaxing beach days here.
